Cthulhu from a Non-Fan: Updates

Thought I'd show where I've been with this lately. It's close to me calling it 'done' besides some more textural stuff I've yet to stumble across and liked.

After this, I think I'm gonna make the rest of the Indiana Jones McGuffin's: Sankara Stones and Holy Grail. I think you can see my desire to make the Holy Grail come out in the Cthulhu idol.

H.P. Lovecraft and Happy Jack

I've been seeing a lot of these "Cthulhu Idols" pop up lately so I decided a couple days ago to try my hand at it.

Blocked it out in clay in about an afternoon and am just sculpting as I go. I don't much know about the whole Cthulhu-lore beyond what Google tells me (because I never really cared for Lovecraft's writing) but I'm gonna see where this goes.

Currently, it stands close to eight inches tall.

Oh, and the little clump of excess clay that was shaved off from the statue had a little, peculiar hole in the middle of it that...well, I couldn't resist.

5-10 minutes of just goofing around.

Backlog

Just some shit I've taken pics of that I've not posted when I ought to have. The first four are designs for a t-shirt contest over on WeLoveFine.com. The first one isn't so good but it gets better in descending order (with my favorite being the final one). I think I'm getting the hang of this Wacom thing; in only four years of having it, too!

This second thing is a commission of my Majora's Mask for someone in Sweden. She's the only person to have bought one so far but, as far as the two I've made: this is the better of the two.

Third thing is this fake hand I've made for a lil' goof and a spoof I made and need to edit together. It's liquid latex pulled from a mold of my hand, filled with this red-dyed dough I made to simulate flesh; over a wire/Sculpey skeleton hand just to give it some depth and some articulation.

...And lastly, my somewhat new dog (what I've had around for a month, now) that I inherited, Bear. This poorly trained, disobedient little bastard has gotten only two things out of me in this time: that bandanna and some serious whoopin's.

Regardless, I'm quite fond of this stupid son of a bitch.

The Penultimate Majora's Mask: FINISHED

Added weathering, lights, and straps. Finally, I can say this is complete.

PICTURE TIME!

 The strap used in this picture is an old, cotton strap belt that I never used. Better used this way than holding up pants.

 The things lining in the middle of the mask are foam pieces to brace my face if I ever decide to wear it again. It can be worn but, unfortunately, it's two pounds of solid plastic spread over twenty inches from your face in every direction so it's quite cumbersome. Besides having to strap it really tight to a normal head, if your head isn't the proportionate size of the Skull Kid's, this thing is gonna give you a bit of a neck ache if you're wearing this more than 5 minutes.

So, it can be worn but I wouldn't condone it if you're a normal human being. However, it does look great when it lights up whether it's on a person or on display.

I'll be keeping this particular one for display but I'll probably put this up on Etsy for orders.

The Penultimate Majora's Mask - Part 6.75

Alright, so much for my four day plan to get this thing done, but it is almost finished now. All's left to do is the eyes (light them up, that is).

BAM!

This is where that week went. The box next to the mask is a vacuum former and, boy, did that take longer than what it should have for what it is. For most people, it takes an afternoon to get one up and running; for me, it takes three days.

Once that was up and running, I went and bought, from a nearby plastics supply company, a 4'x8' sheet of .02 PETG and ended up going through three feet of plastic before I got a good pull for my eyes (which were formed with the "eye pucks" I casted and my oven).

Paint it up and that's where I am now. Gotta figure out how to set up the lights and all tomorrow and, if I'm motivated enough, maybe put straps on it.

The Penultimate Majora's Mask - Part 6.5

Horns are attached (they even rattle thanks to some beans). All I need do is the eyes but the I'm currently rethinking my a current process of going about it. I made a mold of the eye "puck" and thought casting it in a clear resin would be alright (I wanted a layering effect), unfortunately, that method takes way too long as the resin has to cure over night. In order for me to get even castings, I'd have to rotate the resin around 24 hours each layer that's applied and there's no way I can do that.

Thinking on going with vacuum forming to achieve what I'm going for.

The Penultimate Majora's Mask - Part 6

After checking out my bank account yesterday, I mustered up the incentive to work on this thing like a madman.

Got most of it painted yesterday but had to fuck with the spray paints indoors a few days before that (not recommended). It's still needing some details but today I should be able to finish the paint work on the mask and move onto the horns as well as start casting the eye-pucks.

It's not all that visible in the photo but but paint is kinda chunky. I don't know what it is that I have with acrylics but I can ever rarely paint a smooth stroke. Especially that yellow, it has to layer to become a solid color and layering it results in it getting lumpy. As you layer it, the yellow-er it gets; the lumpier it gets. Painting is definitely not for me.

I've set a goal for myself of 3-4 days to finish this thing completely and have casts available for purchase.

Being broke ain't no joke.
